The desktop effects of Linux Ubuntu’s Compiz-Fusion is impressive. I love the timer on the screenshot tool! Being a new user, I haven’t tried Beryl or Compiz but I expect that they’re able to do the same on their desktops. I finally got Conky’s temperature gauge working fine thanks to someone in the forum. Instead of using acpitemp I used “Temp $alignr ${i2c 9191-0290 temp 1}C ${i2c 9191-0290 temp 2}C ” to show the temperature. It works great!

So far everything I wanted to work on Linux Ubuntu are working. Only 1 thing left for me to tweak. I still haven’t been able to make divx work on Firefox. When I have a bit more time, I’ll look into that. I’ll also be looking for other nifty tools/programs to add. There’s so much potential in this OS. I’m glad I don’t have to search for cracked versions of software that I want to install. The updates keep coming. Based on what I’ve read on the forum, I will not be needing an anti-virus software nor a firewall. But I’ll look more into that in the future. For now, I’m completely sold on this free product!

Hardware and Software on Linux Ubuntu

July 18, 2007 at 9:40 am (3d, Amarok, Brother DCP-115C, Firefox, Mplayer, Rhythmbox, Totem, Totem-Xine, Xine, action, add-on, audio, avi, compiz, compiz-fusion, computers, conky, cpu, cpu temp, cube, customize, desktop, divx, effects, entertainment, eyecandy, free, linux, lm sensors, media, monitor, mp3, online, operating system, pidgin, plugin, programs, system, temperature, ubuntu, video, watch, xsensors)

I was surfing the net when my brother asked me to print something for school. It occurred to me that I had forgotten to install my printer when I was setting everything up. I had to reboot into XP for him. And once that was done, proceeded to install my Brother DCP-115C Multifunction Printer. It wasn’t hard to search the forums for a guide. I used this to set it up. I have my printer working fine as well as it’s scanner. I haven’t tried the card reader yet but I hardly ever use that, even on XP. So that’s not an issue.

I have Compiz-Fusion running smoothly and Conky showing the information I wanted it to. To monitor my pc’s temperature, I used this guide. Worked fine. I have Xsensors installed to show the temperatures and voltages on my pc. I have yet to make the temperature show up on Conky. But it’s something I can work on later. Xsensors is more than enough for now. I am able to see my processor’s load, cpu & memory consumption as well as disk usage on my desktop’s screen. Very happy with the results.

I switched to Totem-Xine as my movie player. Now I am able to play .avi files with no problems. The sound is ok. I was able to get the Mplayer plugin on Firefox to play divx files online. But when it’s paused, it doesn’t play again and freezes Firefox. I always have to restart Firefox to get it working again. I watch shows on tv-links every now and then. I will search for more possible solutions and try it out when I have more time on my hands. The way things are going, it seems like nothing remains unsolved for long on Linux Ubuntu.

Conky on Compiz-Fusion

July 17, 2007 at 10:20 am (3d, Amarok, Rhythmbox, add-on, audio, avi, compiz, compiz-fusion, computers, conky, cube, customize, desktop, effects, entertainment, eyecandy, iPod, linux, media, monitor, mp3, online, operating system, plugin, programs, system, video, watch)

I wanted something that would show my system information like cpu/ram/disk usage, temps, etc. that would blend with my desktop. After browsing through the forum, Conky seemed to be the logical choice. I have been trying to get it working for a few hours. I don’t get any error messages during installation but it doesn’t show up on my desktop. I’ve tried the how-to’s and tutorials on UbuntuForums but no go. I did ask if there were any issues with Conky being run on Compiz-Fusion. No answer yet. Although I think I remember seeing screenshots of it. I’ll have to check again later.

So far, everything’s working great. I ran into a little problem in playing .avi files in Totem. I’ve read on the forum that most of them use a diffent video player like mplayer or xmms. I still want to give it a try on Totem. I think Ubuntu wouldn’t ship with that movie player if it wasn’t worth something. I’m not very fond of Rhythmbox though. I chose to install Amarok and it runs great and plays all my .mp3 files with no problems. Rythmbox reminds me of iTunes. I had a hard time navigating through that when I first got my iPod. I guess for the most part it was just me being a windows user for so long and that being my very first Apple product. So the experience wasn’t good. Happy with the iPod though.

Aside from Conky and Totem troubles, I’m looking for an alternative for both if I can’t get them to work. I’m thinking about removing Rhythmbox altogether. Still looking for more ways to customize my Linux Ubuntu 7.04.

Linux Ubuntu’s Compiz-Fusion!

July 16, 2007 at 6:12 am (3d, compiz, compiz-fusion, computers, cube, eyecandy, free, linux, online, operating system, programs, ubuntu)

I’ve been using Linux Ubuntu 7.04 for less than a week. And I am soooo loving it! I got it it’s own special drive. *grins* I love how simple and flexible it is. I can make it do anything I want! Imagine having clay in your hands instead of cubes. The support for the OS is just amazing. Definitely beats that of any free support that I’ve tried. This is my first foray into a non-windows operating system. And I have to say that so far, things are looking great. I still need XP for my ipod but other than that… I do everything else in Linux Ubuntu. I initially wanted Vista for it’s aesthetic value. But once I’ve seen what Linux can do… there’s no way in hell I’m putting that on my machine!

Compiz-Fusion… What can I say… It just works! For me that is. And so did Linux Ubuntu somewhat. It hasn’t given me any problems that weren’t solved by a lil searching and a lot of help from folks in UbuntuForums.Org . I definitely would recommend this to everyone I know. I still have the 3 live cd’s that Canonical sent me for free (Thank you so much!). I’m so impressed with how easy it is to install. That’s a lot of luck on my part. I know it easily could have gone another way. But oh well! Here I am raving about how great it is!

This is the guide I used to install it. Link to Guide It went flawlessly! To make it look right and the cube to work properly, I had to make sure the following things were done/set:

1)System>Preferences>CompizConfig Settings Manager>General>General Options>Desktop Size>

Horizontal Virual Size = 4
Vertical Virtual Size = 1
Number of Desktops = 1

2)System>Preferences>CompizConfig Settings Manager>Desktop

Check Desktop Cube
Check Rotate Cube
Check Viewport Mouse Switch

Luckbringer

July 11, 2007 at 2:37 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, multiplayer, online, the five pillars, war)

After more than 12 hours, no one has tried taking my mage’s land yet. There were 2 more attempts yesterday but so far I haven’t lost in defense. It’s interesting to see how much damage they’ve taken considering they’re a lot higher in NP and, I’m assuming, more experienced at the game than I am. I’m happy to keep all the land I’ve taken. I hope the success rate on defense continues.

About the topic. Prior to joining this guild, I have only been able to get the Luckbringer once. Unlucky huh. When I shared my experience with my guildmates, they gave me a tip on how to get it. It worked the first time I tried it and I’ve been using it everytime I log in. It’s very convenient on attack runs. It eliminates the need to pull up a target mage’s description to see if he’s in protection or not. And lessens the advertisements too. I’m sure the clicks help the game a little in revenue (I think). I would definitely recommend clicking around for the Luckbringer to my students ermm… to all players for that matter.

Hellfire Chronicles

July 9, 2007 at 8:28 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, multiplayer, online, the five pillars, war)

Since having that spell on defense, I haven’t lost so far. The stack recommended by my guildmate has been working wonders as well. It has not affected my success rate on attacks. It’s a welcome change to seeing how much land I lost when logging in. I checked how much NP my attackers lost and I can see why I was able to defend successfully. I’m slowly getting more land. We’ll see how this works as I go up…

Old Tricks Do Work

July 7, 2007 at 10:52 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, multiplayer, online, the five pillars, war)

I’ve been playing this game, The Five Pillars, on and off for a few years. My recent more than a year long hiatus ended this reset on the Normal server. I still consider myself a newbie but since the game recognizes the number of resets (?) that I have played, it gives me a gold star and says I’m a veteran. By accident I discovered how fun it is to be a mentor. Although by no means am I an expert in the game, I had enough experience to answer their questions. The wiki was a lot of help as I referred one of my students to the guide there and I got a very good feedback. So… yay for Wiki!

The only color I have ever played seriously is red. I’ve tried others in different servers (back when there were more than 2) but I found myself wishing I had picked mountain magic instead. I had played that color in another game as well which I have left a long time ago. But staying on topic, what old tricks am I referring to? First is using red’s beneficial enchantment “Mountain Strength”. I was put off by it’s upkeep (1,500 in red mana) but a guildmate recommended it and said it was worth the pain in managing my upkeeps. I haven’t really noticed anything different but it’s not hard to manage resources with it on so I guess I’ll be keeping it and using it in the future as well. And one I just tested a few minutes ago is having the spell “Hellfire” on defense. I was able to keep my land and upon computing the amount of NP lost by me and my aggressor I was quite surprised. He lost over 2 million in NP and I lost 800,000 or so. That put a smile on my face. I will keep it on and see if it has same effect on my next visitor.

BBQ in another world

July 4, 2007 at 2:57 am (coordination, game, guild, multiplayer, online, war)

A good 4 hours spent by people all over the world on bbq-ing a mage. I play an online text-based massively multiplayer online war game called The Five Pillars. I’ve been playing on and off for a few years since college. It’s an interesting game for me and it boasts a good number of helpful and intelligent players. I’d say that this was a very productive day game-wise. It’s my day off so nothing much is done in reality except do a little laundry and watch Kyle XY. And now I’ll go back to watching…

Television Online

July 4, 2007 at 2:56 am (action, drama, entertainment, fiction, free, online, sci-fi, tv, watch)

I’ve been watching Kyle XY online for the past few days. It was Heroes and Criminal Minds before that. The internet is quite a tool for entertainment and is quickly becoming the tool for entertainment. Who wouldn’t want to watch a show commercial free while doing other stuff? It’s convenient and satisfies the curiosity pretty quickly. It just works for me. And I bet for a lot of people too.
