Finished Upgrade: Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 to Hardy Heron 8.04

Posting from Linux Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04, second try. My first try was doing an upgrade from the manager. After finishing that and booting up in Heron 8.04, 2 things caught my eye – the prompt for updates and a Crash Report. First thing I clicked on was the Crash Report but it does not respond. Clicking on Update Manager doesn’t do anything either. I went in search for possible solutions but none came soon enough. I wanted to give Heron a try and the wait was not promising. So I went with the popular vote and did a clean install.

I made the mistake of doing it with my XP drive still plugged in. My boot setup is that of two drives operating independently of each other with XP being the primary drive. Both XP and Ubuntu booted up as it should but the problem starts when you remove one drive. Grub error 17 comes up whenever that’s the case. Next order of battle is to fix the windows MBR. Luckily, when things were working I was able to burn a way out. I went into Recovery Mode DOS and entered “fixmbr”. Once that was done, XP booted up nice in its own independent way.

I then took off the XP drive, leaving only the Linux drive and booted up the LiveCD. Reinstalled Linux and of course take a nap. Grub is safe and sound only in the Linux drive. Everything works peachy. As in my last post, there are 2 main things I want working. My Conky and Compiz-Fusion settings aren’t up and running yet. But I will be working on those next. In the next release of Ubuntu, I will attempt the upgrade first and the clean install will be the last option. I just have to remember removing the XP drive if I end up doing it again.

To summarize: If upgrading does not work, remove the XP drive before doing a clean install. I’m glad to have kept a record of the changes I have made. At least I have some sort of guide to put my settings back the way they were in 7.10. I have XP and Linux Ubuntu 8.04 running as planned. Spent a good deal of time but definitely another learning experience worth the effort.

Jumpstart Changes

September 21, 2007 at 10:12 am (Firefox, action, add-on, calculator, computers, coordination, entertainment, fiction, free, game, guild, international, mage, maintenance, management, media, monitor, mountain, multiplayer, network, pc, red, search, the five pillars, war, watch)

A suggestion was posted asking for the removal of the Jumpstart server altogether because of the low activity compared to the Normal server. There was vote was held in the forum giving the players a chance to have their say on the game. Majority of the players chose to increase the turn rate of the Jumpstart server. How fast will it be? No announcements have been made but we’ll find out soon. There’s only 7 days left before Havoc starts. There is no start date yet for the next reset. The new and improved server aims to increase player activity as well as the current player base.

Red Stack

September 2, 2007 at 7:27 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, mage, mountain, online, red, stack, the five pillars, war, watch)

Unfortunately, this is not a guide. Merely notes on what works and what doesn’t. But even that is not 100% accurate. Last reset, a guildmate of mine – BlueCrus, showed me a wonderful red stack that worked well with our wonder – Academy of Trajectory. I have been experimenting with flying and ranged units. The stack I was given consisted of 2 melee units, 3 ranged units and 1 melee unit. Balrogs and Death Knights are interchangeable as the top 2 stacks. Then Magmademons, Ice Hexes and Acid beasts. With Mountain Rises at the bottom to kick the fodder. I also picked up Mind Flayers and had them behind the Magmademons. With Hellfire and Flask of Gasoline on defense, it was great!

With a different wonder, I didn’t really use this stack extensively. But the times that I did, I think it did better than the other stacks I’ve tried. If you’re a mountain mage and looking for a stack, this is a good one to try out. Let me know how it goes…

Ranking Newbie

August 23, 2007 at 3:13 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, multiplayer, online, the five pillars, war)

These are my first resets, in Normal server and Jumpstart server, where I plan to try my hand at ranking. I’ve been playing the game on and off for a few years now but I’ve always found myself in the middle of a war somehow. The challenge of surviving a series of attacks and being able to defend most of them successfully is fun for me. After more than a year of hiatus from the game, I’d like to try something new. I don’t pretend to know a lot about the game. I still feel that the length of time spent playing the game is hardly proportional to skill. I don’t know much, just enough to survive.

I’ve also started to experience how it is to be a mentor. Purely by accident though. If the mentor settings were not reset, I wouldn’t have been surprised by the students waiting on me. I like being able to help them though. It’s a welcome change to my usually non-existent in-game exchanges. Quite a few of them are playing or used to play a game very similar to The Five Pillars. A couple, I don’t know if it was assigned or by chance, are in the same country as I am. That’s certainly nice to know. Most of the people I know prefer the graphic games while I find them tiring. I try but I don’t really keep playing.

So we’ll see how this goes. There’s more to learn and Havoc is coming…

Completed Conky on Linux Ubuntu 7.04

August 14, 2007 at 8:38 am (3d, Amarok, Brother DCP-115C, Feisty Fawn, Firefox, Mplayer, Rhythmbox, Totem, Totem-Xine, Xine, add-on, audio, avi, compiz, compiz-fusion, computers, conky, cpu, cpu temp, cube, customize, desktop, desktop effects, divx, effects, entertainment, eyecandy, free, game, guild, iPod, linux, lm sensors, media, monitor, mp3, online, operating system, pidgin, plugin, programs, sci-fi, system, temperature, ubuntu, watch, xsensors)

Finally, I have everything I wanted on Conky. I had a chance to research and edit the .conkyrc file today. I just added the downstream / download and upstream / upload graph with the borders. I think that’s about it. But who knows, maybe tomorrow there’s a new feature to be added. But for now, it is complete.

On another note, I’ve been watching videos/episode/movies on tv-links. What I do is that I download the source first through wget and then play it on VLC. It’s more steps than what it should be but I don’t mind. Only bothersome when the broadband connection is slow. But other than that, it’s all good. Most videos/episodes I can view directly on the pop up window. I added Xchat for my mIRC needs. Although pidgin worked great but I wanted a separate program for that. I’m looking for a way to be able to use and view a webcam since Pidgin doesn’t support that. I also added Bluefish since I will be taking up a web authoring project soon. Haven’t tested it yet. Looks promising and the reviews are good.

My Sony Ericsson w810i was automatically detected by Ubuntu. Although the desktop icon looks an iPod, no big deal. I can download the pictures I’ve taken and add new songs. Very happy it works! My iPod is automatically detected as well. Haven’t tried changing the songs using Ubuntu though. But since Ubuntu mounts it on the desktop, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Great help from Ubuntu Forums. Here’s the .conkyrc code I used:

Luckbringer

July 11, 2007 at 2:37 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, multiplayer, online, the five pillars, war)

After more than 12 hours, no one has tried taking my mage’s land yet. There were 2 more attempts yesterday but so far I haven’t lost in defense. It’s interesting to see how much damage they’ve taken considering they’re a lot higher in NP and, I’m assuming, more experienced at the game than I am. I’m happy to keep all the land I’ve taken. I hope the success rate on defense continues.

About the topic. Prior to joining this guild, I have only been able to get the Luckbringer once. Unlucky huh. When I shared my experience with my guildmates, they gave me a tip on how to get it. It worked the first time I tried it and I’ve been using it everytime I log in. It’s very convenient on attack runs. It eliminates the need to pull up a target mage’s description to see if he’s in protection or not. And lessens the advertisements too. I’m sure the clicks help the game a little in revenue (I think). I would definitely recommend clicking around for the Luckbringer to my students ermm… to all players for that matter.

Hellfire Chronicles

July 9, 2007 at 8:28 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, multiplayer, online, the five pillars, war)

Since having that spell on defense, I haven’t lost so far. The stack recommended by my guildmate has been working wonders as well. It has not affected my success rate on attacks. It’s a welcome change to seeing how much land I lost when logging in. I checked how much NP my attackers lost and I can see why I was able to defend successfully. I’m slowly getting more land. We’ll see how this works as I go up…

Old Tricks Do Work

July 7, 2007 at 10:52 am (action, coordination, entertainment, free, game, guild, multiplayer, online, the five pillars, war)

I’ve been playing this game, The Five Pillars, on and off for a few years. My recent more than a year long hiatus ended this reset on the Normal server. I still consider myself a newbie but since the game recognizes the number of resets (?) that I have played, it gives me a gold star and says I’m a veteran. By accident I discovered how fun it is to be a mentor. Although by no means am I an expert in the game, I had enough experience to answer their questions. The wiki was a lot of help as I referred one of my students to the guide there and I got a very good feedback. So… yay for Wiki!

The only color I have ever played seriously is red. I’ve tried others in different servers (back when there were more than 2) but I found myself wishing I had picked mountain magic instead. I had played that color in another game as well which I have left a long time ago. But staying on topic, what old tricks am I referring to? First is using red’s beneficial enchantment “Mountain Strength”. I was put off by it’s upkeep (1,500 in red mana) but a guildmate recommended it and said it was worth the pain in managing my upkeeps. I haven’t really noticed anything different but it’s not hard to manage resources with it on so I guess I’ll be keeping it and using it in the future as well. And one I just tested a few minutes ago is having the spell “Hellfire” on defense. I was able to keep my land and upon computing the amount of NP lost by me and my aggressor I was quite surprised. He lost over 2 million in NP and I lost 800,000 or so. That put a smile on my face. I will keep it on and see if it has same effect on my next visitor.

BBQ in another world

July 4, 2007 at 2:57 am (coordination, game, guild, multiplayer, online, war)

A good 4 hours spent by people all over the world on bbq-ing a mage. I play an online text-based massively multiplayer online war game called The Five Pillars. I’ve been playing on and off for a few years since college. It’s an interesting game for me and it boasts a good number of helpful and intelligent players. I’d say that this was a very productive day game-wise. It’s my day off so nothing much is done in reality except do a little laundry and watch Kyle XY. And now I’ll go back to watching…
